Summer Court Night Volunteer

Project Youth Court, Inc. is a New Haven-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in the state of Connecticut that currently manages the state’s first and only youth court. Youth Courts are like traditional courts in many ways, but they differ in two key aspects: they are staffed by high school volunteers and they follow the principles of balanced and restorative justice. By participating in Youth Court, young people have the unique opportunity actively engage in the justice system and intentionally shape their shared community values. Teenagers who might otherwise face stiff penalties for youthful mistakes—or escape consequences altogether—are given a second chance and a way to repair the harm their actions may have caused.Court Night Volunteer duties may include:

  • Working alongside the case manager and volunteer coordinator to ensure that court night operations run smoothly
  • Training high school volunteers who serve as jury members and attorneys and helping those high school volunteers prepare for cases on nights when there are cases
  • Greeting volunteers at the door and ensuring that all high-school volunteers act responsibly and in accordance with court rules
  • Ensuring volunteers are dismissed responsibly
  • Working with high-school volunteers who aren’t serving as attorneys and ensure that they use their time before the hearing productively. This may include bringing in speakers, running workshops or organizing activities
  • Should be enthusiastic and enjoy working with high-schoolers
  • Interest or experience in the law, teaching or tutoring are assets that we are looking for in an application
Volunteer Requirements:
Our court nights are on Tuesdays from 4pm-7:30pm. To volunteer, you must be available at that time regularly over the summer. Those who contact us will be asked to fill out a short application.
